About Our Club
The Santa Barbara Flyers began in the
1980's when some adventurous, local dog owners went in search of fun
and challenging activities for their canine athlete companions. They
found the super-drive sport of Flyball, which was quickly
gaining popularity in North America.
The locals began competing in 1985 and
the club soon hosted its first tournament here in Santa Barbara. The
Santa Barbara Flyers continue to host an annual tournament, known as
the Dog Days of Summer, typically in late July or early
August.
While advancing in Flyball, club
members soon discovered another fun and fast-growing dog sport:
Agility, where a dog (guided by their handler) completes an
obstacle course
designed to challenge the human-canine teams' competitive speed and
skills. Current members compete in tournaments sanctioned by
the AKC, USDAA and NADAC, and have titled their dogs in Novice,
Starters, Advanced, Excellent and Masters levels.
Because obedience has become and
remains a staple in dog training, the Santa Barbara Flyers added
teaching and competing in obedience to the club's activities, taking
dogs to superior levels and earning top titles.
Members continue to compete in
obedience trials both locally and throughout the Southwestern U.S.
Throughout its growth and expansion,
the Santa Barbara Flyers have established and remained true to a single
goal: To have FUN with our dogs while promoting responsible
dog ownership. We welcome everyone, from non-competing dogs and owners
interested in just having fun to dog/handler
teams that want to train for advanced competition in a fun and
safe environment.
So whatever you do, listen to your
dog... and just COME OUT and PLAY!
